I did it in June 2006 on medical advice. I still miss a glass of good red wine but hey, it's not the end of the world. I have dropped about 30lbs and my knees are very grateful. I also did the 24hr monitor but for atrial fibrillation and I now take blood thinners each day. You have great spirit and courge, Andy. I'm sure you will do fine. I have a regular biopsy and the prognosis is ok. Several of my friends are on BP tablets - all apparently successfully. One of them told me last week that his cholestrol count was 14.8 but statins had cut it to 5. There seem to be a lot of modern treatments for BP and blood conditions that weren't around just twenty years ago. Hope everything works out well. P.s what camera are you now using. I enjoy reading your blog af...Andy- First of all... I enjoy reading your blog after seeing you on LUF for many years. Keep up the good fight.

It's always fun to see the perspective of someone who visits a country and only sees a limited part of it, much like I do when I travel. We form our opinions based on what we see and who we interact with and that little "slice of life" becomes what we think about the country. Naturally.

New England and the towns you've visited (and Florida) are representative of "one America", but there are many. If you visited my state, California, you would need to keep that pedal down as nobody drives the speed limit, ever. LA driving at 80 in full traffic is something to be experienced.

In a country this big, with this many people (300 Million) and communities you can really experience almost everything you can imagine. Charming small towns, bustling metropolises, wealth dripping luxury and abject poverty (by the industrialized country definition). It's all here and every region is very very different.

Major cities all have their own personalities, New York, Chicago and San Francisco couldn't be any different. Small towns and cities also run the gamut.

Culturally, if you can call TV that, is certainly not what you have seen. I can't think of a single religious program in my area that's not on some funky channel in the middle of the night. US TV produces the most programming, by far, compared to any other region. Some are crap mind you, like in all markets, but there's some terrific stuff as well. I laugh seeing many of our US programs in Paris when I am there.

Anyway, it's great to read about your trip and I hope you're having a terrific time! Make sure you take lots of pictures along your journey!

KentAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579078618975222953.post-10832293223972020652011-06-14T16:30:40.598+01:002011-06-14T16:30:40.598+01:00Hey Andy--come to the real colony one day ;) I sus...Hey Andy--come to the real colony one day ;) I suspect that even though it's changed a lot in Toronto over the past decade or two, time was when over 80% of the population was UK ex-pats.

You're spot on about the flag, the extravagant quantity of food everywhere, except for expensive restaurants (you pay more $$ for less food in the US as a rule), the extra- friendliness (which, by the way, is a bit odd--strangers treat you like they're your family almost. Nice, but still a bit confusing), and of course, TV (and radio)--though the quality cable comes from networks like HBO and Showtime; local cable is, well, local cable :)

Anyway, I just wanted to tell you as a Canuck I feel the same way travelling in the US a lot of the time. A wonderful place, a wonderful people, but not home :)Jamiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08372067133089028574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579078618975222953.post-66507714407345862432011-06-12T10:49:23.947+01:002011-06-12T10:49:23.947+01:00Excellent article and nice to see the right decisi...Excellent article and nice to see the right decision being made.Andrewhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00338473094793604518noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3579078618975222953.post-58149287134457064932011-06-09T22:04:31.104+01:002011-06-09T22:04:31.104+01:00As my dad says about the politeness in the shops: ...As my dad says about the politeness in the shops: "I'd rather go to the US and be told to "have a nice day" by someone who doesn't mean it than be told in the UK to "get stuffed" by someone who quite obviously does". The last time I went (about 7 years ago or so), there was no evidence of what you describe.

It may be an 'unpleasant' place in late autumn (and onwards), but in the midst of summer there is something invigorating about it and the wind blowing straight through you.
